Open at start (check box) (Alt + O)

Options for Midi Out...

Close midi out when you switch to another app. (if not playing) (check box)

This makes it easier to share out devices with other programs...

If you have this selected, and another program also works the same way then it saves opening and closing midi out when you go from one to the other - it all happens automatically. As soon as Bounce Metronome detects that you are working with another program, it will close Midi out so long as there are no notes currently sounding. So then the other program will be free to open it.

This is necessary because normally only one program can open the same out device at the same time. Sometimes out devices permit themselves to be shared with a midi merge - that needs care anyway with programs that use pitch bend retuning as they adjust the pitches - and also expect the pitch bends to stay as they had set them in every channel.

Close midi out when you stop play (check box)

Auto closes after fractal tune stops, or after scale, chord progression, seed

Out Devices Capabilities (Ctrl + 106)

Set up Bounce Metronome to work correctly with your soundcard, synth or other device...

The thing is, the midi spec is a very wide one and also comes in several variations. So synths with many different capabilities all count as midi synths.

Also much of the midi spec. is optional, for instance some synths are locked to twelve equal and can't play pitch bends at all.

So, to make best use of your device's capabilities, Bounce Metronome needs to know what it can do. It needs details about how it deals with instrument selections and pitch bends in order to optimise the pitch bend retuning methods.

Bounce Metronome also needs to know whether the device has non melodic percussion capabilities.

Unfortunately there is no way for a midi player to interrogate a midi output device to find out directly what its capabilities are. So you need to run some tests to find out what it can do.

The easiest way to do this is to run the three wizards. You will be asked to listen to some notes played and to answer some simple questions. Based on your answers, Bounce Metronome will then be set up to work optimally with your synth, soundcard or other device.

For an overview of the various midi standards such as GM, XG, GS, and GM level 2, see:

Midi Out Resets (Ctrl + 80)

Resets the modulation, tremolo, channel volume, sustain pedal etc whenever you open midi out, also send pitch bends in advance and set the pitch bend range....

The Reset All Controllers (controller 121) is a standard method to reset everything in one go. Most devices will respect that.

But if you need to, you can choose what resets are sent to your midi device when you open MIid Out.

These resets are also used at the start of saved midi files.

You can also configure whether to send pitch bends in advance to help optimise the pitch bend retuning method, and whether to reset the pitch bend range..

Midi Out and Save Timing (Ctrl + 58)

Use this to add a pause after opening midi out or before closing Midi out and in other situations where a pause may be needed for some synths or sound devices...

Most of these settings DEFAULT TO SWITCHED OFF - and can impact on note timings so are BEST LEFT SWIITCHED OFF.

They are required only rarely, and most users will never need any of them.

The only ones you are likely to use normally are:

  • The pause before opening midi out
  • The pause after closing midi out.
  • The pause at the start of a midi file may also be useful.

All the other delays are normally left switched off. The other delays may cause issues of timing when switched on, as they can delay the note ons if they occur immediately before a note..

Notes in Play - Midi Out (Ctrl + 47)

Shows all the notes currently in play - midi channels and cents values...

Really, you only need this if curious to see where they are relayed too, and what the pitch bend values are in cents - some musicians like this information to be at hand for sequencing.

Most will probably find Bs | Notes in Play more useful.

This just shows the notes currently playing at this very moment - though you can also set it to refresh only on note ons so it then shows the situation as it was last time there was any activity.
